Traveling can be an exciting adventure or a part of your professional career, but for many, it also comes with concerns about skin health, including acne breakouts. Unfortunately- the ever more common airplane flights add to this common concerns as airplane environments, often characterized by dry air and a crowded setting, can exacerbate skin issues. Dry air, stress of travel and oil build-up from not washing your face during the time difference or not so convenient hotel stay, can all lead to acne flare-ups.
Here's how you can prepare your skin before, during and after your travel and your flight.
To prevent acne while traveling, focus on maintaining a consistent skincare routine, keeping your skin hydrated, and avoiding common travel triggers like excessive touching of the face and certain foods. By taking proactive steps before, during, and after your trip, you can minimize the risk of breakouts and enjoy your travels with clear skin. In short – your skin goes with you so do NOT neglect it on a busy trail. It will thank you in spades with clear complexion and trouble-free time.
Establish a consistent skincare routine and consider a facial a few days before your trip to ensure your skin is refreshed and hydrated.
Cleaning your skin from dead cells that may potentially mix with extra sebum and clog pores may go a long way to keep your skin healthy during the trip
Bring travel-sized skincare products, including a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Consider the climate and adjust your products accordingly (e.g., hydrating products for cold climates, SPF for warm climates). Do not plan to buy and/or use new products while traveling. You have no idea how your skin may react to them
Be mindful of potential acne triggers like too many carbohydrates, too much fried, spicy and greasy food, too much processed sugar and excessive alcohol.
Wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser to remove impurities and prevent clogged pores.
Drink plenty of water and consider using a facial mist with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid.
Drink a lot of water (not soft drinks or juices but preferably bottled water.) Our biome (the bacteria in our GI system are used to the specific balance of ingredients provided by the water we drink routinely and food we eat as our own diet. Any change may throw them off balance leading to putting the entire body off balance. Water content s aside form food, is responsible for the largest difference on your trip so investing in more standardized bottled water seems like a very good idea worth the expense. This will make your trip extra stress free and your GI and your skin healthy while traveling.
Apply a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated (use non-comedogenic non oily “hydrating” products) and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect against sun damage. Even the places that have less sun still expose your skin to harmful sun radiation.
Be mindful of touching your face, as your hands can carry many bacteria ( some new to your system)
If you wear makeup, opt for light, non-comedogenic products and remove it thoroughly before bed NO MATTER WHAT TIME THE BEDTIME ARRIVES.
Consider how your environment might affect your skin and adjust your routine accordingly. This includes climate ( temperatures), humidity, wind and the pollution as well air-condition and the amount of time you spend outdoors vs indoor activities
What to do when you are back home or your destination place
Special Tips for healthy skin why you are flying
Water-based wipes can help you clean your skin during your flight. Salicylic acid-based wipes can target oil and provide light exfoliation mid-flight or after. Avoiding touching your face while flying is crucial. Minimize picking or touching facial skin during the flight as this is a simplest way to reducing physical irritation that can go a long way in maintaining clear skin.
